Water or tea dampness staining on front board, in a circle as if someone used the book as coaster for their drink. Head and tail of spine rubbed, but intact. Gilt lettering rubbed, but legible. Ex-libris plate on front paste-down: Wm.

General toning and foxing throughout text-block, especially to plates. Some off-setting to pages adjacent to plates. Cording exposed in some instances throughout text-block, mostly around missing plates. Marginalia found on late leaf of text-block (270 pp). Water dampness stain and loss exhibited on rear end-page. Binding is intact, but fragile. The 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery was a heavy artillery regiment that fought in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by the consolidation of Robert's Battalion Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, Segebarth's Battalion Marine Artillery, and the 1st Battalion Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery.

Recruiting was finished on February 17, 1863, with Joseph Robert as colonel, R. Howard as lieutenant colonel, and John A. The regiment was sent to Fort Monroe in Virginia, except for Company H, which was sent to Baltimore, MD. During the Suffolk Campaign, companies A, B, F, and G. Were sent to Suffolk and participated in the siege.

During the Gettysburg Campaign, Company H was assigned to the Second Division of the Army of Potomac's Cavalry Corps and was present at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2 and 3, 1863. It fought at the East Cavalry Battle on July 3. Fort Monroe is a former military instillation in Hampton, Virginia, at Old Point Comfort, the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula.

Fort Monroe played a crucial role in the American Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln had Fort Monroe quickly reinforced so that it would not fall to Confederate forces. It was held by Union forces throughout the war, which launched several sea and land expeditions there. In 1861, the prototype 15-inch Rodman gun was delivered to Fort Monroe and was subsequently fired 350 times. Terry (provenance) mostly likely studied and read this work at Fort Monroe, VA, before the Civil War. He was then transferred as a gunman into the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery Regiment.
