This 1860s Civil War broadside showcases the work of John Krider, a skilled gun maker who specialized in producing weapons for the Confederate Army. The broadside features Le Mat pistol, a unique firearm that was favored by issued Southern soldiers during the war. The piece is an original from the period and serves as a rare glimpse into the weaponry used during one of the most significant conflicts in American history.

This unique sidearm was also known as the Grape Shot Revolver. It was developed inNew Orleansin 1856 by Jean Alexandre Le Mat, whose manufacturing effort was backed byGeneral P. Beauregard, who became a general in theConfederate States Army.

They were originally manufactured byJohn Kriderat Sportsman Depot Pennsylvania, in 1859, including the first 250 prototypes. John Krider(February 17, 1813 November 12, 1886) was an Americangunsmith(Le Mat Confederate Army pistol) andornithologistwho operated a sporting goods store on the northeast corner of Second St. InPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, for much of the 19th century. On the second floor of Krider's shop was a taxidermy shop, where hundreds of bird specimens were prepared over multiple decades.

Krider has a bird specimen named after him, Krider's Hawk due to his active interest in Audubon Society type endevors. See photos for more details.
