The 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment: For a decade before the outbreak of the war in 1861, the 1st Regiment of Virginia Volunteers, a militia organization, was a familiar part of the Richmond scene. Observances of patriotic anniversaries, the arrival of visiting celebrities, state funerals, and the dedication of monument were some of the occasions for turning out the regiment. Six of its companies were called out for active duty in 1859 during the John Brown crisis. On May 25, 1861, the 1st Virginia numbering about 600 left Richmond for Manassas Junction and the war. Unlike the state's other regiments, the 1st Virginia was almost entirely urban in its composition, with clerks, laborers, carpenters, and machinist, leading in the various occupations represented on its rolls.

The regiment was also unique in its large number of foreign-born; Company C, the Montgomery Guard was nearly all Irish, and Company K, the Virginia Rifles, was largely German. On July 18, 1861, the regiment received its baptism of fire at Blackburn's Ford.

Some declared the next battle, at Williamsburg on May 5, 1862, was among their worst experiences of the war, fighting all day without being relieved, with 8 killed and 27 wounded. Bur even worse was Seven Pines, where they had 15 killed and 39 wounded. As part of James L. Kemper's brigade, the 1st Virginia fought at Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, and Fredericksburg, and in 1863, with Pickett's division, they left the main army to take part in Longstreet's operations against Suffolk, returning in time to make the invasion into Pennsylvania. On that fateful third day at Gettysburg, the regiment lost 22 killed, 71 wounded, and about 100 captured and missing.

The 1st Virginia made its second tour of service in eastern North Carolina early in 1864, taking part in the capture of Plymouth. Soon after their return to Virginia the regiment ought at Drewry's Bluff, and spent the summer and winter on the Howelett Line. Active operations in the field were resumed in March 1865, and after Five Forks and Sayler's Creek, only 17 of the "Old First" remained to be paroled at Appomattox Court House.
