RICHARDSON, NEW YORK, IN 1882 William Swinton wrote this monumental work immediately after the war. As a reported for the New York Times, he was an eyewitness to innumerable battles and personally knew many of the chief officers, who provided him with memoirs and diaries, at the end of the war. He also interviewed many of the Confederate officers to gain their perspectives. The Army of the Potomac was led by four generals, the first three of whom - McClellan, Burnside and Hooker - were no match for the Confederate generals who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. Lincoln's disappointing search for a general equal to the task of defending Washington and conquering Lee ended with Meade who achieved his first and decisive victory at Gettysburg less than a week after his appointment. Nevertheless, it required Grand's day-to-day direction of offensive operations beginning with his Spring Campaign of 1864 to bring the war to a close.

With the trained eye, intellect and writing skill of an outstanding newspaperman, Swinton synthesized the material he drew on to reconstruct the battles vividly and to analyze the troopers' performances. His observations about the personalities and accomplishments of men like McClelland, Grant, Hooker, Meade and Hancock are truly revealing, both with respect to how they related to their closest subordinates and superiors, as well as to the common soldier.
