Captain John M Deane served with the 29th Massachusetts and was also the Brigade Officer in charge of maintaining the defenses in the vicinity of Fort Stedman, Petersburg, Virginia. An Original Civil War Copy Letter from Captain Deane, Camp, 29th Mass Vet Vols Near Petersburg, Va. March 13, 1865 reporting his pickets have attempted to deliver a letter to the enemy pickets who refused to communicate to our captain of the picket guard and tonight our captain will attempt again to send the letter across the lines tonight. Captain Deane also reports a private of the 100th Pennsylvania was accidentally shot through the hand by the accidental discharge of his musket.

The 29th Massachusetts was a notable Civil War combat unit, the only non-Irish regiment to serve in the Irish Brigade. Their battles included Big Bethel, White Oak Swamp, Antietam, Bethseda Church, The Crater at Petersburg and Fort Stedman to name a few. This Letter came Captain Deane's effects.

Captain John Milton Deane who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor defending his post at Fort Stedman during Lee's last Confederate Offensive, March 25, 1865. Postwar Captain Deane was Grand Army GAR Post Commander at Falls River, Mass. He is buried at his boyhood hometown, Freetown Massachusetts. 1pp ink, 8 x 11 Age stains, Overall VG.
