Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Lieutenant Colonel George D. Wells on the ffep and dated in 1861. Blind ruled, pebbled cloth with gilt spine lettering. Unusually fine condition with just a few hints of foxing to prelims. A long poem of 273 stanzas intended to "draw a faithful picture of the heroism, the dangers, the privations, the toils, sacrifices, sufferings and triumphs of the actors" in the Mexican-American War. The book was written by Captain William F. Small of the First Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, who had planned to publish several volumes following, however due to lack of success of this first canto, no more appeared. A very interesting association copy, inscribed to Civil War commander, George D. Wells was in charge of Fort Lyon, and led his troops in the Battles of Ripon, New Market, Piedmont, Cool Springs, Third Winchester, and Fisher's Hill. Wells was killed in 1864 as his troops retreated from General Jubal Early's Confederates on Hupp's Hill.Based in Gig Harbor, WA, we offer all manner of rare books, ephemera, and more.
