A very uncommon, scarce book. The book presents a comprehensive history of the unit and full biographical sketches of unit members, many with portraits. It contains a unit roster. The 5th West Virginia Cavalry Regiment was organized from the 2nd West Virginia Infantry Regiment on January 26, 1864.

The regiment was consolidated into a single battalion aa Charles Town, West Virginia, in September 1864 and was absorbed by the 6th West Virginia Cavalry Regiment on December 14, 1864. If fought in the Union Army.

The unit conducted operations in Hampshire and Hardy Counties in 1864 before moving to Springfield. It moved to Cumberland, Maryland, in March with duty at Patterson's Creek there. It later moved the Charleston and later took part in Crook's Expedition to the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad. The unit conducted operations at Cloyd's Mountain, New River Bridge, and participated in General Hunter's Expedition to Lynchburg. The unit conducted operations at Lexington, near Buchanan, New London, Diamond Hill, Lynchburg, Liberty, Buford's Gap, Catawba Mountains, Salem, before returning to Charleston. It was involved in guarding the railroad in the district west of Sleepy Hollow in West Virginia before being consolidated to a battalion at Charleston in September. It was transferred to the 6th West Virginia Cavalry at the end of the war. THIS BOOK IS IN NEAR FINE CONDITION This original, first edition book is in excellent condition; it comes in a clear, Mylar dust jacket to help protect it (see photo #2).

The book is bound in green-colored, cloth covers with lined, decorative highlights on the cover and gold lettering on the spine. The book is clean and has solid binding throughout. The exterior has no bumping, but has light rubbing and edge wear as shown. The gold lettering has faded a touch, but can still be clearly read.

The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent/fine condition. The book has no writing in it, except for a small, gift inscription and signature, in pencil, on one of the rear end pages. The book has no other writing in it. It has no foxing, smudging, stamps, pasteboard or other markings.

It is not an ex-library book. The book contains a frontispiece illustration of Major General Robert H. Milroy and is loaded with portraits of unit members and other scenes throughout. The book has no looseness or lean and both hinges are fine.
